Amash announces candidacy for U.S. Representative of Third District
Tue, Feb 09, 2010

State Rep. Justin Amash today announced his candidacy for U.S. representative in Michigan’s Third Congressional District, which comprises Barry, Ionia, and most of Kent counties.  The position is now held by Rep. Vern Ehlers, who has been in office for nine terms.  Amash, a conservative Republican who champions limited, constitutional government, is the state representative of Michigan’s 72nd House District.

“I am committed to bringing restraint, accountability, and transparency to the federal government,” said Amash.  “The president and Congress are spending our money and our children’s money to bail out failing companies and reward irresponsibility.  Government should not be entangled in our private industries and personal lives.”

Fellow state representatives Dave Agema (R-Grandville), Bob Genetski (R-Saugatuck), and Tom McMillin (R-Rochester Hills) have all endorsed Amash’s bid for the U.S. congressional seat.
“Every day I see Justin’s integrity, hard work, and devotion to transparency,” said Agema. “We need his principled, consistent, conservative leadership in Congress.”

Amash has never missed a vote in the Michigan Legislature.  He has also earned a wide following among Michigan voters for posting all of his votes, with explanations and an opportunity for interactive discussion, on his official Facebook Page.  He was one of the first two state legislators to list his office expenses, staff salaries, and legislative benefits online.

Amash graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan with an A.B. in Economics and earned his J.D. at the University of Michigan Law School.  He was a business lawyer before becoming a state representative in 2008.
